There's a post on his livejournal with this year's image and pre-ordering information:

It's done:

In the end, I realize that I didn't do a whole lot of really detailed shots even though I only used the macro lens. So if I had it to do over again, I might have not given myself that restriction. For me, this book is more about the arrested decay than about the macro goodness, but it was a neat experiment.

A difference for me between this year's project and last year's is that I'm giving myself a day or two before I publish the book so that I'm happy with the printed copy. The goal was to get to a PDF of the book in 31 days. I did that. Last year I hit "print" right away and I ended up with some typos.

I think I'm about a week into it and I've got 5 images I may use so far. I plopped them into the Booksmart template and will leave them there until I have more photos and decide for sure.

Here's the theme that's sort of emerging: things with cobwebs and crumbled things (not food, but statues and not necessarily ancient ruins either, just things that were whole and now aren't).

So far, I've mostly taken photos in my neighborhood. I've read about the abandoned hospital or dentist office in Alameda that was creepy and potentially haunted but also burned down last year.

If anyone has any suggestions for places near Alameda and Oakland for me to photograph, let me know. And I'll be in New York near New Windsor, Pomona and Nyack for four days in July so if you happen to know any places near there, it might be hard for me to get around but if there's a must-see thing, I'll find a way. I don't remember any abandoned places near Nyack but I grew up near there a very long time ago and I'm sure it's changed a lot.

I can't nap because I've had far too much caffeine today. Eep.

I can't believe I'm still awake. But I wanted to try to write a brief summary of the past two days before I fall over.

I did manage to get up for sunrise yesterday morning. It was kind of so-so but I got some pictures over by one of the lagoons once the sun was finally up. I found this four inch tall skeleton doll alongside the lagoon. When the early morning light hit it, it looked as if Mr. Bones was sunbathing on a rock.

I went back to the bird sanctuary afterward and found out the best section to wait and watch for birds that were close enough to take photos with the 55-250mm lens I have. An egret appeared at the very edge of the beach and an onlooker asked me, "Did you pay him to perform for you?" The egret stayed pretty close for at least ten minutes or so and I got to practice taking photos of birds :)

In the late afternoon, about two hours before sunset, [livejournal.com profile] cortneyofeden met up with me and we went around taking photos together. Sunset was gorgeous. Although, I have to say, I was envious of her because she could move along the beach anywhere she wanted, whereas I didn't go past the boundary of Park Street, which was the limit of my section.

Today I got up early and went out for about an hour and a half. The sky was blah and gray so I gave up on that and went to take photos of ice plant. Tonight after work, Steve picked me up at BART and we rushed home to get my gear and get out and shoot while there was some light left. I tried a few pictures of the moon and then Steve came to pick me up. We ate dinner at Ollie's and I decided to squeeze out what I could of the last half hour and found a silhouette of a big tree with the moon next to it.

The crazy running around part of Alameda on Camera is addictive but now it's done. Now comes the figuring out what to submit for the show. I took a lot of photos yesterday and it looks like my favorites are from those shoots. I've narrowed down the selection and will sit with them for a while until I decide which one(s) to enter into the show and how I'm going to present it/them. (We're each guaranteed to get one in but last year I submitted two and I might again this year. We'll see.)

If nothing else, I got a little more experience taking photos of birds this weekend and that's huge. I used to find it extremely frustrating but it's a little less so now. I'll probably post some of the photos after I submit them for the show so it'll be a while.
I went to the launch party and was one of the last people to sign up for the drawing so I got one of the very last pieces of the map. There were quite a few people who kept saying, "I hope I don't get Bay Farm Island." It wasn't just me. One of the young ladies in the youth division who won two prizes last year got a section of Bay Farm again this year and said it was a curse. But I told her she made fabulous art last year and I was sure she would again this year.

I chose a piece of the map from the hat and it's a section of the island I don't know well at all. In fact, I had no idea there was a bird sanctuary on this island! The section I got is on the south shore - right next to, but thankfully not IN the south shore shopping plaza. (I met the lady that got the shopping plaza. She was NOT thrilled.)

Steve and Sofi and I went exploring, driving and walking around and checking out my area. There are a few lagoons in the section, the Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary and some really ugly houses. I took three pictures with the tiny bit of light from the moon through the clouds tonight. I'm going out for sunrise tomorrow. Because of where this section is, I'll definitely be able to get views towards San Francisco for sunset and possibly views towards San Leandro Bay for sunrise.

Oh, and we met a guy on the walk who told us I could rent a canoe or a kayak from someone in Jack London Square and go out on the water to take pix if I wanted to. We'll see about that - but it's cool to know it exists.

This is gonna be fun :)

I've uploaded my SoFoBoMo book!! You can see my SoFoBoMo page here:
http://www.sofobomo.org/2009/books/DeniseCicuto/My-chosen-family/

There's a reduced size version PDF of the blurb proof there.
(The PDF was too large to upload so I only uploaded one image from it to the SoFoBoMo page. If you'd like to see the whole PDF, let me know and I can email it to you.)

You can also see the first 15 pages of the final version at the blurb bookstore here:
http://www.blurb.com/books/737896
(If you want to buy a copy, click on the the "About Book" link on the upper right of that page. I'm not marking the price up. What you see is what blurb charges.)

In the end, it has 51 photos (only one of which I didn't take).
30 people (and pets) posed for me.
I'm happy it's done. It was a great learning experience.
It might not be perfect, but it's done!!
I've posted some photos from my Sofobomo project on my flickr page for you to see here:

Today was supposed to be a day of several photo shoots, many of which were thwarted by a migraine that came back this afternoon :( I did, however, manage to take a picture of ME that I don't hate and have already inserted into the book and got in a few photos of my friend Catherine.

I've rescheduled one shoot until Thursday but with my work schedule and trip this Friday, there won't be enough time to get everyone. I will accept this. It's ok. I won't take anymore photos of anyone else over webcam because this IS a book about photographs as much as it's about the people in them.

I have just over a week to finish my book. I stayed up very late last night working on it and have been doing a bunch of rearranging of the layout today. I took photos of people last Thursday at my art opening and had a photo shoot with one person that morning. I have been bugging my husband to pose for photos with me but that seems to be the wrong tactic since he hates having his photo taken. It's hard to take candid shots of yourself without a tripod though . . .

It's not exactly down to the wire but this coming week I have one photo shoot scheduled on Tuesday, maybe I'll squeeze in one or two more and then all that's left is to take photos of me and Joe together in the redwoods. Piece of cake, right?

yikes!

Well this has been a very productive weekend. I had four different photo shoots with friends between Friday and today! I am now at the required 35 photos for the Sofobomo project but I'm not stopping there! I still have at least 4 or 5 more people to try to schedule time with so I can take photos of them. One of them leaves the country on Friday so I'm not sure I'll get to her in time :( I will take my camera with me this week to a few celebrations including anniversary dinners and my photo reception. I'm sure there'll be a few photo ops over the course of the week.

There aren't yet any photos of ME in the book. I'll have to remedy that soon, even if it means setting up my tripod and the timer and just posing in front of it (not my favorite thing ever.)
I've decided to take the advice of my friends and cut myself some slack. After all, this project is really for me. I've decided that this project was on pause for the past week. Real life got in the way of a lot of things.

Tonight I worked on the cover of the book (How exciting!) and the dedication page. I have to figure out what to do about the lines in the photos I took over the webcam (criss cross lines appear on some of the photos, making the subject appear as if he was in jail or something).

Anyway, I have three sets of subjects lined up to photograph this coming weekend. Onward.

Today I took photos of [livejournal.com profile] rightkindofme and her daughter and had a lot of fun. I think I'm more excited than hesitant about the project after today.

I'm taking a lot of photos of my friends and family. They're not all great photos from a technical viewpoint but they're fun photos and they convey a lot of happiness. And right now, that's ok by me.
If I think of this as more of a photo album of my loved ones and their loved ones, I can forgive myself for the flaws.

Is it really Day 10?

I took some photos of friends today who will appear in the book. I also spend a bunch of time last night and tonight playing with layout in blurb. It's really quite easy to use. I've put 10 photos in so far with text and found out that there are lots of options for text and photo layouts, which is great.

I have more than 10 photos to go into the book - I just haven't gotten them off of the camera yet. I have numerous photo ops left and photo-worthy celebrations. It occurs to me that I don't have any photos of ME in the book yet. I know that's going to be rough because I hate photos of me and now I'm the one who has to take them. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it . . .
.
