I just took Xander to the vet. Traumatic enough, ok. Then they gave him a cortisone shot because of the skin inflammation due to the fleas. And they trimmed his nails. I took him home and gave him a bath and put in ear drops to clean his ears. He's now wet and hiding in [livejournal.com profile] merchimerch's closet.

I can not even think of giving him the antibiotics until someone comes home to help. He needs to go back to the vet for bloodwork in two weeks because now he's a "senior cat" and he needs to get his teeth cleaned too. Oh, right, and then I have to put on the Advantage once he's dry.

My cat hates me so much right now. And now I have to go to work and leave him alone.

Oh, goodness. With the teeth cleaning, make SURE he has to absolutely get them cleaned. It's really really rough on an older cat. If it's not absolutely crucial, I'd say don't do it. That's just me. A friend, some years ago, got her cat's teeth cleaned, and they put him under anethesia, and he had heart failure, and died. I've also heard that getting their teeth cleaned isn't really that .. needed, and can sometimes be a scam.
I could be completely off my rocker. But.

Thanks so much for your very useful comment. I will NOT be getting his teeth cleaned now. I'll do the blood testing, but not the teeth cleaning. I was already hesitant about the whole putting him under a general anesthetic just to have his teeth cleaned. F**k that.

If he can eat dry food well, then you shouldn't have any problems.
My cat can't eat dry food very well. Only certain kinds and he doesn't really chew anymore.
But, you know what? He's sixteen. I'll feed him all the canned food he wants. I'm not takin' him to some scary vet to get his teeth cleaned.
I've been lax in taking him to the vet (er, last time was maybe... 7 years ago?), but, as old as he is, unless it's something Serious, I'm not gonna worry.
Get one of those kitty toothbrushes, and put something yummy tasting on it. Or zonk him out on catnip and then do it. :)

i second the make sure he absolutely needs the teeth cleaned, it is something many vets say everytime to make more money.

And I am good at giving antibiotics and will help anytime I'm home.

You are a GOOD kitty mommy

You are a Good cat mom, you care for your aging cat and dont want him unhappy and itchy from fleas. We had to shave our cat Sean(a maine coon) we only shaved his belly and left the top alone, he looked like hi-lo carpet. He hated us for 6 months.
If he can eat dry food, and hios breath isnt to awful, skip the cleaning thing. he doesnt need it.

He can eat dry food and his breath doesn't stink. So, no cleaning for him! Thanks for the input.
