I left my house this afternoon at the time I told F I'd be at the SCA event. I got off to a late start because I decided that today was the day I would finish the documentation for my Turkish Bath class. The event was a Middle Eastern themed event with an Arts and Sciences competition for best Middle Eastern accessory. I figured I'd bring my Turkish bath bundle. And the documentation.

Ajax prepared me for smash-a-rookie comments about my "tertiary documentation". All of a sudden I didn't want to go to the event. I was scared to go by myself and I was scared to face harsh criticism.

Digression: I generally don't deal well with criticism which goes back to the totally un-constructive criticism that my father used to give me when I was in grade school. For example: "This paper is a piece of shit." Yeah, I was about 10 or so when he said that. Is it any wonder that I excelled in high school after that?

So, I went to the event. I showed up at 2:30 or so, found F and apologized for being late. She didn't think it was a big deal at all (She rocks, but more about that later).

I found out where to submit my entry for the competition. I setup the whole display with the parts of the Turkish bath bundle and noticed that there was only one other entry. I came back to the setup area at just the right time. The Sultana, the Princess and the Baroness were judging the entries. I got to explain each item to them. The Sultana asked about my persona. I told her that it was 16th century Turkish. She was happy to hear it and told me that she is 13th century Persian.

Another entry had shown up, so there were three. I watched the finals of the fighting tournaments and waited to find out the results of the A&S competition. I went back to the judging area and found that we each had flowers with ribbons and a coin on our entries. Cool, we all got recognized.

But wait, there's more. The three of us were called up in court. This was only the second time I had ever been called into court. The first time was for my Award of Arms. My entry tied with the entry of a hand-painted bowl. The tassel belt got an honorable mention. The Sultana gave me a ring from her hand and told me how impressed she was with my research!!! I also got a basket of goodies - some handmade candles and pretty candlesticks, a necklace and a scarf.

Go me! This was the first time I've ever won anything by myself in the SCA. Usually Ajax wins loot for me in tournaments. Yay!!!!!!!!

Went back to hang out with a bunch of people at F's house. We did some dancing. She and her troupe mate are really inspiring to watch. I am going to start taking dance lessons out here as soon as possible. I think I'll probably start from scratch. The dance is inside me but it's confused with all of the bad memories. F told me that I should dance with her more often and she will pull the dance out of me.

Before I left, I asked F to walk me outside. I wanted to clarify whether or not she knew about the open relationship that Ajax and I have. She said she did - she knew a long time ago. I was concerned because F and I are starting a potentially great friendship. And I know that she has a monogamous relationship with her husband and that they are somewhat religious. She said that obviously Ajax and I have a great relationship and that our relationship works for us and their relationship works for her and her husband. She doesn't have a problem with it.

So all in all, it's been a really great day. The shy little girl in me was very wary of going out at all. I'm glad I did after all.
