Because [livejournal.com profile] rm puts it more eloquently than I ever could, I am linking to her take on the Open Source Boob Project. I commented there about an incident that happened to me at a con many years ago that got triggered by this whole thing.

[livejournal.com profile] rm also has a poll she wants people to fill out about unwanted sexual contact here:

I'm sorry that you had that experience.

REading about this whole thing made me think about going to cuddle parties, and how they are so great, and how they are great because they are really controlled, and that kind of openness just can't happen in real life. Just. Can't. (for all the reasons in the excellent take you linked, and even a few more)

This whole thing has made me kind of relieved that I apparently give off a "do not approach" vibe at cons. Whether I intend to or not.

I have a number of thoughts on the whole thing, but I am refraining from comment cos so much has been said, and in ways so much more eloquent than I could express them.

Ditto. I spend most cons cosplaying male characters who are surly as hell. People stay away from me. And by the time they see me in something feminine or revealing they've already learned enough about my personality that they are pretty consistently respectful. But I feel lucky that my proclivities armour me the way they do.

I very much appreciated what you wrote, and that you took the time to write it.

Thank you.

I'm having a pretty interesting conversation with another fannish friend in email right now about women in fandom and how there's been an incremental shift in their presence and perception over the last several years and how this little debacle because it's happening on LJ, might just cause things to change drastically now. Hopefully I'll have time to write about that soon as well.

Discussion is good, and if it can help in a shift in attitudes both towards and by women in fandom, that would be a boon to us all. I have looked at some of your other, also thoughtful entries, and intend to add you to my FL, if that is OK. The perspective of someone who (if I read this correctly) works as well as plays in the industry is worthwhile indeed. I used to work in comics, and witnessed (and wrote about) the industry both change but also "not so much" over a decade or so, and find the same is true of other genre industries as well. I look forward to reading more of your insights.

Cool. I'm going through and adding people back now.

I do a lot of criticism/review stuff in the realm of SF/F and have a series of Harry Potter trivia books out. I also do SF/F fiction, although just short stories so far (there are two novels in progress, one with a cowriter, now). I'm also an actor, and while I haven't appeared in anything SF/F related the way people relate to performers at cons and policing my own behavior about it can be very complicated. I'm a guest at Dragon*Con this year, and so is an actor who was my first childhood crush -- this is beyond cool and funny to me, but it also feels weird. It's a constant navigation.

Thanks for the link over!

If nothing else, the OSBP has afforded me a great deal of interesting reading, and an opportunity to "meet" smart new people.

Thank you for that pointer. RM's post was eloquent indeed -- as was your comment.

I just saw the tag! Hahaha. Thank you. You're very kind.

FYI, I don't know if you care about this, but to me it was almost as exciting as GF croissants -- I found gluten-free Bavarian bread from Germany the other day. Let me know if you want the info.
