Since [livejournal.com profile] siodhchan was so helpful sending people my way, I thought I'd make a post for everyone to see.

Hi, I just moved to Alameda. If you live here or near here, please say Hi and give me your favorite things to do and see on the island.

Many thanks.

but this post is friends locked and not visible to everyone ;)

Thanks. I changed it. That's what I get for having the default setting be friends locked.

Yeah, most of the cool places I know of to visit are in San Francisco (Exploratorium, Golden Gate Park), Oakland (Lake Merritt, Oakland Museum), Berkeley (Tilden Park, northern Telegraph Ave.), and San Jose (Market Street theaters and museums). :)

Alameda does have a Mexican restaurant I like to go to, though. It's also one of the few things in the East Bay that's open late. Juanita's at 1326 Park Street.

[livejournal.com profile] nisaa will probably meet [livejournal.com profile] kineticphoenix at the party tomorrow night. She used to live in Alameda and may be able to give more tips. But yeah, [livejournal.com profile] deyo has some good advice too. I also like the Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve and the very scenic roads in the area, the Chabot Observatory, Mount Tam in Marin County, all the bridges, trips to Santa Cruz (with Kiva), trips to Harbin Hot Springs, tonnes of neighbourhoods in the City (the Castro where I live, the Haight, etc.) the Wild Westside pub in Bernal Heights, Ocean Beach, Baker Beach, Point Reyes, highway 1, the I-280, Ca-35, Ca-160... actually, lots of Bay Area backroads (all this assuming you hav a car)... and I'll think of some more.

Just being a buttinsky...

I wanted to at least alert you to [livejournal.com profile] hopeforyou and [livejournal.com profile] mikz, who live in the Bay Area and whose circle of friends definitely seems to overlap with yours and [livejournal.com profile] stevefava's. Drop in on their journals if'n you're so inclined. Them's Good Folks.

Hi again!

Favorite things to do/see on the island?

I like to walk along the beach especially at dusk. I like to go out and eat with friends, so some of my favorite places -
Kamakura's - corner of Santa Clara & Broadway
Ole's Waffle Shop - on Park Street between Santa Clara & Lincoln.
Jim's Coffee Shop - on Lincoln between Park Street & Oak.
India Palace - on Buena Vista by Constitution Way.

Yay! Thanks for the suggestions! Maybe we can meet up for coffee sometime once I get a little more settled (i.e. unpack some more boxes).

I just tried India Palace on your suggestion. Aside from the language barrier with the waiter, it was quite good. Thanks!

Sounds great!

Oh yeah boxes. I moved last August and still have so many boxes to unpack.

A few other places that might interest you -

Ice cream - Tucker's on Park Street, Loard's at Towne Center & of course Fenton's on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland (one of Rainy's favorite places)

Mexican - Acapulco's on Lincoln and Willow.

Sweet Dreams used to be on the corner of Russel(?) and College in Berkeley, right next to the original body shop(us version)
SD is a fantastic candy store and BS is Lush type yumminess.
I have no idea if either of the are still there, but that corner is 2 blocks up from where I used to live back in the dawn of time. That area of Berkeley is or was Very Venice ish.

I started an I <3 Alameda list on Yelp (http://www.yelp.com/list_details?userid=SZDeASXq7o05mMNLshsdIA&list_id=P4SrBchiIYpCeYaX8M0lPw) [if you're not familiar, Yelp's a user-review community and pretty healthy around here so you can find info on just about anything there.]
Welcome to Alameda :)
