nisaa: (no wheat)

Two questions for the gluten-free and wheat-free crowd:

1) Is there a list somewhere of hidden ingredients in makeup products that you know of?
2) What brand of cosmetics do you use?

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] zohra pointed out that IKEA sells a gluten-free tart called Almondy and you can get it with or without chocolate. I got the chocolate one yesterday and it's yummy!!

I have asked another person on my FL, who is going through a similar battle to yours, to see if she has any information regarding your question. I'll forward any information she sends me.

I do know that many cosmetics and hair care products do contain chemicals which are derived from wheat, and usually they are declared as a positive thing in the product, so they are listed as wheat proteins or starch.

If you are concerned about hidden chemicals, I would stay away from products packaged for the US market only- EU and Canadian ingredient listing laws and regs are much more stringent, and if the product is tested and contains a chemical not declared on the ingredient list, the distributing company can get into quite allot of trouble.

Any ingredients declared on the ingredient listing of a product must have an INCI name- International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient- and there is an extensive database available on line here- http://www.ctfa-buyersguide.org/ It can be of some use, I hope.

It's hard to find good lists. For some time I read that annatto was going to kill me and then later I find out that's not really the case. Same with blue cheese. The mold may have been grown on bread at one time, but it is not really anymore. It is much more likely to be grown on agar or something similar in a sterile area.

anyhoo...

Here is one list. It is a great site, if you haven't found it yet.
But again not a whole lot of make-up info.

I'm glad you liked the Almondy cake! *yarm*

You've stumbled on the one area where I haven't done much research. There's a reason, too. OK, two reasons.

Rule #1: Without contacting the manufacturer, there is ZERO way to know if wheat is in your cosmetics, because they fall under trade secrets.

Rule #2: The testing process for cosmetics is ABYSMAL. Try to use organic stuff, really, because it's literally impossible to know what they put in the stuff.

Doing my research, I have concentrated on making sure my lip glosses are gluten free. I realize that I suck. I have been told that Nars Cosmetics are gluten free (narscosmetics.com). Burts Bees will tell you what is and isn't gluten free...I know their regular lip balm is. Chap Stick is gluten free and so is Blistex. So I use those the most. I obviously don't buy anything with oatmeal, because all commercial oatmeals are contaminated with wheat.

Also, there's gluten in a lot of sunscreens, which is frustrating to me as well.

There's so much to look into. Really. *sighs* Some Google searches on gluten free cosmetics will help out, but that's really all I've done.

The Celiac Disease Center (http://www.celiacdiseasecenter.columbia.edu/CF-HOME.htm) at Columbia Prebyterian puts out a pocket guide to GF living in which there is a whole section on GF cosmetics. ([livejournal.com profile] lifecollage pointed me in your direction.)

Thanks for the IKEA tip!

The good news is that several breweries are putting out gluten-free beer.

I use Lush cosmetics, for the most part.

That's easy enough then. Another excuse to spend money at one of my favorite stores! I have no use for bath bombs right now since I don't have a bath tub in my new place.

Thanks!!

Here via [livejournal.com profile] mactavish (though I see several other familiar names in the comments above). I don't have anything to offer regarding cosmetics, but I made a post last month wherein I shared my discovery of GF alternatives now being tested in certain markets by Old Spaghetti Factory. FWIW....

Thank you very much! It's great to know an Italian place that has GF stuff. I had the two wheat-free options on the menu at my new local Italian place a few weeks ago.
I hope to promote more of this. I'm Italian - it would be great to have more options available when dining out.

Ummmm, yeah!

And I know what "Stage Bob" means, too.

Nevermind. I realize now that your comment was aimed at [livejournal.com profile] liamstliam. But I'd still like to meet you someday!

Either way. :)

He's on lots of my friends' friends-lists, and lives in the same town as [livejournal.com profile] deyo's best friend (who, [livejournal.com profile] liamstliam, lives on the south shore of Hardy Pond).

(And he's getting married in the same town [livejournal.com profile] deyo and I got married in.)

I asked your question on the celiac community because really I'm fairly curious too.
