Ok, it's official. I've decided that I'm making eye pillows for the holidays. Why? Because I've got a ton of fabric left over from making practice rice pillows for Tuina class, some rice and a bag of French provence lavender. So, there. I don't know what I'll make for guys (I don't think they'll dig eye pillows much. Maybe they'll just get food type things.)

Plus I can make them practically in my sleep (or while watching tv).

Spike it with a little bit of lavender oil, to make the blossoms go further.

other use for lavender

i made an outrageous lavender panna cotta last month. (i hope my modesty isn't overwhelming.) if the lavender you have on hand is also edible and you like panna cotta, you should so make some. i'll give you the recipe if you like. the combination of cream and lavender and honey is a serious aphrodisiac. congrats to the pregnant yo san friend, btw, when is she due?

Re: other use for lavender

The lavender I'm using for the pillows probably isn't edible - but there's some in my garden that is. Yes, please send me your recipe for panna cotta! I've never had any before, except in gelato form.

This year, I'm making fleece shawl/blankets for all the girlz on my list. Big rectangles of fleece with a slit in one side, blanket stitch around all the edges in a contrasting yarn. I've gotten it down to 2 hours/blanket, which is just fine by me. Every 2 episodes of CSI = 1 finished blankie. Yay.

Go home-made holidays!

Not to be presumptious, but should I be on your holiday gift list, I'm allergic to lavendar.

I always seem to get lavendar eye pillows as gifts. I love eyepillows, but not lavendar...

(I'm in no way offended if I dont get one, I'd just rather not have lavendar even arrive in the mail)

Thanks, that's a good thing to know!
I'm probably going to make them for the obligatory family members and maybe a few friends from school (because one of them suggested making eye pillows with the extra fabric).

Re: other use for lavender

ok, here's the recipe. the lavender really makes it orgasmic, frankly. i don't know why panna cotta is so good, it's really just played-up sweetened cream, but it's my favorite dessert. it seriously takes ten minutes to make. but then when it's all chilled and you eat it you'll go make another batch, so it really takes double the time, in a sense.

1 tablespoon lavender, tied up into a bit of cheesecloth or encapsulated in a tea-ball
1/4 cup cold water
4 teaspoons unflavored gelatin
4 cups whipping cream (or half and half)
1 cup sugar
1 honey
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Pour 1/4 cup water into metal bowl; sprinkle gelatin over. Let stand until gelatin softens, about 10 minutes. Set bowl in saucepan of simmering water. Stir just until gelatin dissolves, about 1 minute. Combine cream, lavender, sugar, honey and vanilla in heavy large saucepan. Bring to boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. The lavender will try to float, so squink it the package around with a spoon to drown it as soon as possible and then keep an eye on it to make sure it spends some time not floating. Remove from heat. Squeeze lavender pouch (or against side of teaball) to extract as much liquid as possible. Add gelatin mixture; whisk until well blended.

Divide cream mixture among custard cups or ramekins. Chill for several hours or overnight. Set cups in small bowl of warm water to loosen panna cotta, about 20 seconds each. Run small knife between panna cotta and custard cups. Invert panna cotta onto plates.

(Side note: the recipe is pretty reliable, but if you are like me and occasionally get sloppy with the measuring and it accidentally comes out too loose, pretend you were going for lavender pudding. Still just as tasty. To serve slop it into a bowl with some chopped fresh fruit like strawberries and some crumbled cookies.)

Man, I'm going to go make a batch!
